Tashkent Islamic University (TIU) is a public university located in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. Founded by a decree from the First President of Uzbekistan, Islam Abduganiyevich Karimov, on April 7, 1999, TIU was the first Islamic university not only in Uzbekistan, but also in the region of Central Asia. TIU offers programs of study in 10 academic divisions leading to bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees.

As the first Islamic university established in the country, the aim of the University is to bring to future generations the rich and unique cultural and spiritual heritage of the Islamic religion, and to prepare qualified specialists - bachelors and masters, in a wide variety of fields. Students are required to master the basics of religion, research principles, the history and philosophy of Islam, and issues relating to its role in the life and development of society.

It is one of the most prestigious universities of Uzbekistan, carrying out its activities under the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Uzbekistan.

Tashkent Islamic University is under the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Uzbekistan and conducting its activities under this organization. The Rector of TIU is the principal executive officer of the university and is appointed by with approval of the Prime Minister of the Republic of Uzbekistan. The rector reports directly to the Prime Minister, who is the Head of the Cabinet of Ministers, and is responsible for the daily operations of the university. Currently, the rector of the TIU is a doctor of economic sciences, Professor Abdullayev Ravshan Vahidovich. He has been sitting in this position since September 13, 2007.

Academic staff

The university has more than 500 students in undergraduate and graduate programs, and about 10 doctoral candidates. The Faculties and Research Center employs 125 teachers, among them 13 professors and 47 associate professors.

Faculties and academic divisions

There are 3 faculties and 10 departments at Tashkent Islamic University. Those three faculties are Faculty of history and philosophy of Islam, Faculty of Islamic law, economics and natural sciences and Faculty of professional development and retraining. Two of those three faculties (Faculty of history and philosophy of Islam, Faculty of Islamic law, economics and natural sciences) grant undergraduate degrees in religious studies, psychology, history of Islam, national idea, the basics of spirituality and law, the world economy and international economic relations, computer sciences and information technology and master’s degrees in religious studies, Islamic studies, economy of foreign countries and country studies, information and multimedia technology. The faculty of professional development and retraining conducts with the retraining employees of public organizations, specialists and teachers of the educational system and civil servants.

Academics

Classification

Tashkent Islamic University is not a large, four-year primarily residential research university accredited by the government of Uzbekistan. Full-time, four-year undergraduates comprise a large amount of the total university enrollment. The undergraduate instructional program emphasizes professional programs of study and there is a high level of co-existence between the graduate and undergraduate program.

Academic calendar

The university follows a standard academic calendar based on the semester system, which divides the academic year, starting in September, into two 18-week semesters (fall and spring). The fall semester ends in mid-January and the spring term lasts from mid-January to early June. The summer which lasts from June to September is holiday.

Research

There is the center for research on Islamic studies at the University. The followings are the main objectives of the center:

• To develop guidelines for researches on Islamic studies;
• Revival, analysis and development of the rich theoretical religious scientific heritage of ancestors, and bringing them to the general public on the basis of the accumulation and synthesis of the results of research and publication of manuscript sources;
• To defend the role and importance of Islam in the world, region and our country in multi confessional terms based on the study of the role of Islam in the history of world civilization;
• Analysis of contemporary religious processes both on a regional scale and at the international level.

The center for research on Islamic studies consists of seven departments such as department of Qur’an studies (Tafseer), department of hadith, department of history and philosophy of Islam, department of Islamic law (fiqh), department of spirituality, art and cultures, department of studying sources and manuscripts, department of the expedition and reviews.

The center collaborates with the following organizations and centers:

• Committee for religious affairs under the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Uzbekistan;
• Committee for coordination of science and technology under the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Uzbekistan;
• Muslim boards of Uzbekistan;
• The Imam Bukhari Tashkent Islamic institute
• Imam Bukhari international center
• Ministry of defense of the Republic of Uzbekistan;
• Scientific and practical center of the national idea and ideology of the Republic of Uzbekistan.

Treasury of sources

The treasury (the fund) of sources of the university involves more than 360 manuscripts and 750 lithographs, and 3540 modern rare books in 1510 titles. One of the main and valuable manuscripts of the fund is one of the versions of the “Qur’an of Uthman” (also known as the Samarkand Kufic Quran) which is believed to belong to the third caliph Uthman bin Affan.

Currently work continues on the scientific processing, classification and cataloguing of manuscripts and lithographic books. The catalogue of Fund's manuscripts prepared for publication. The fund continues collecting data and purchase of manuscripts and lithographic sources.

Through the activities of the expedition department, storage constantly updated with rare written sources which are the basis implementation of the University's research and invaluable source of scientific information. Data of the manuscript fund successfully is used in their studies by professors and lectures, researches and students of the University.

The UNESCO chair on religious studies and the comparative study of world religions

The UNESCO chair on Religious studies and the comparative study of world religions operates at the Faculty of history and philosophy of Islam. The chair was established in the context of the International Congress on Interreligious Dialogue and Culture of peace in Tashkent (14-16 September 2000) with the participations of the General Director of UNESCO, Mr. Koichiro Matsuura.

The chair has 1 PhD holder, 6 PhD candidates, 2 senior lecturers and 3 teachers.

There are 25 training courses for bachelors and 12 disciplines for masters that are conducted in Uzbek and Russian languages.

The chair's priority themes for research are: “UNESCO and Uzbekistan: cooperation for the sake of religious tolerance”, “Formation of religious tolerance traditions in Uzbekistan and non-Islamic religion (by way of example of Christian confessions)”, “Qur’an – an important source for studying the history of Islam incipience”, “The role of scientific heritage scholars of Shosh oasis in the development of science and culture in Central Asia”, “The fight against religious extremism and terrorism”, “Actual problems of the European religion”.

Each year on April 7, on the opening anniversary of the Tashkent Islamic University is being held conference: “Tolerance – guarantee of peace and stability”.

ISESCO chair

ISESCO CHAIR FOR THE STUDY OF ISLAMIC CIVILIZATION

From the speech of The President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Sh. Mirziyoyev at 43rd session of the Council of Ministers of Foreign Affairs the Organization of Islamic Cooperation: ‘Another initiative of Uzbekistan is related to the establishment of special department of the Islamic Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization under the Tashkent Islamic University. The main direction of the new department will be related to history and present situation of education, science and culture in the Muslim world. So, department would offer specific courses on them’.

Information about establishment of the “ISESCO Chair for the Study of Islamic Civilization” at the Tashkent Islamic University 43rd session of the Council of Ministers of Foreign Affairs the Organization of Islamic Cooperation was held on 18–19 October in 2016 in Tashkent under the slogan "Education and Enlightenment - Path to Peace and Development". The President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev participated in the event and took the initiative to open Special Department of Islamic Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ISESCO) at the Tashkent Islamic University. On May 22–26, 2017 the delegation accompanied by rector of the Tashkent Islamic University (TIU) R.Abdullaev and the vice-rector I.Usmanov visited the capital of Morocco. On May 24, the delegation of the TIU met with the Director-General of the Organization Abdul-Aziz bin Othman At-Tuveyjri at the ISESCO Headquarters in Rabat. They discussed the issues of training specialists in the sphere of Islamic Studies in Uzbekistan and noted role of government in providing religious and intercultural tolerance. During this meeting Director General of ISESCO and rector of Tashkent Islamic University signed the Memorandum of Understanding on the establishment of ISESCO Chair for the Study of Islamic Civilization. Opening ceremony of the Department of ISESCO for Study of Islamic Civilization was held at the Tashkent Islamic University on August 26, 2017. Due to this, the opening ceremony of the department was attended by the Director-General of ISESCO Abdul-Aziz Usman at-Tuveyjri in this regard. The activity of the Chair corresponds with Ensuring the security, inter-ethnic harmony and religious tolerance, the implementation of balanced, mutually beneficial and constructive foreign policy that the fifth direction of ‘Strategy actions in five priority areas of the Republic of Uzbekistan in 2017-2021 years’; It should be noted that at present there are 18 chairs of ISESCO in the world. ‘ISESCO Chair for the Study of Islamic Civilization’ at the Tashkent Islamic University is one of 18 chairs of ISESCO in the world; In the 2017-2018 academic year, this department has been specializing in magistracy specialties ‘History (Islamic Civilization)’, and 4 masters have been accepted. Graduates of this specialty work in different spheres of the society, studying the rich scientific heritage of the scientist and spreading them to the general public. The purpose of the department is also important for this aspect;

The main aim of establishing the Chair: The first is concerning to heritage of ancestors, scientific works, manuscripts. So, to write educational and scientific literature based on them, booklets and books is one of the main goals of department. The second is related to the study of history of science, education and culture in Muslim societies, its present state, perspectives. So, to study Islamic scientific and educational institutions, social, educational, cultural, economic life in Muslim societies, brightening the prospects of cooperation with Muslim countries, providing transparent information about Islam, preparation of scientific and educational publications are our main purposes.

Branches of TIU

TIU branch in Termez state university

Branch of Tashkent Islamic University will be opened in September 2018 in Termiz city. Also in Termez city will be opened Imam Termiziy High School for Arab language and hadith education.

International cooperation

Tashkent Islamic University maintains ties of cooperation with various international organizations, universities and research centers around the world.

As a result of collaborative activities Tashkent Islamic University established a relationship with the Supreme Islamic Council of the United States and George Washington University, Center for Islamic Studies at Oxford University (UK), Eastern Academy of Koenigstein, Munich and the Göttingen University (Germany), the World University Handong (South Korea), the International Islamic University Malaysia, the International Institute for the Study of Modern Islamic World and the University of Rotterdam (Netherlands), University of Munster (Germany), University Joongbu (South Korea), the Institute of Finance (India), Cairo University and the al-Azhar University (Egypt), International Islamic University Islamabad (Pakistan), and Waseda University.

The University has established strong relationship with existing offices in Uzbekistan, international organizations such as the Konrad Adenauer Foundation, GEDRA HENKEL, Friedrich Ebert Foundation, the Goethe-Institute (Germany), cultural center V.Hugo (France), JICA (Japan), European program Tempus, UNESCO, Kuwait International Charitable Foundation, Indian Council for Cultural Relations, as well as a number of diplomatic embassies.

It should be noted that the special role of the University is to ensure religious tolerance and ethnic harmony in Uzbekistan. Statesman of various countries, heads of public organizations, in particular, the President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin, the King of Malaysia Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Jamalullail, Minister of the State of Kuwait for Waqf and Islamic affairs, Sheikh al-Azhar Muhammad Tantovi, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Iran K.Harrozi, Prince Talal ibn Hassan of Jordan, President of the Islamic development Bank Ahmad Muhammad Ali, and other distinguished guests visited the higher education establishment.
