Frere Brocardus of Brochart (lat. Brocardus Monacus)[1] (fl. 1300s) was a French Dominican monk and priest who traveled through the Balkans in the 12th century. In 1332, Brocardus, the alleged author, writes in the Latin medieval manuscript "Directorium ad passagium fasiendum" how the Abbanois (Albanians) and Latins suffered under the "very hard servitude of the most hateful and abominable lordships of the Slavs".[2][3][4] He also describes a race hatred and religious persecution of Catholic Albanians.[5] The script is considered the first reference to the existing of written Albanian.[6]
