Ethercalc is an online spreadsheet software.[2][3] It is an alternative to Google Sheet[4] or Microsoft Excel. It's hosted with Node.js and written in LiveScript.[5] It's interface is simplistic and focuses on usability instead of being able to have the full power of a full desktop app.[3] It works in real-time.
EtherCalc is presented as the successor of SocialCalc, developed by Socialtext. The latter itself comes from WikiCalc.[6]
SocialCalc was originally designed to open, edit and save the spreadsheet online, not to show everyone's contributions in real time. A version of SocialCalc released in 2009 did allow real-time collaboration, however, but the performance was poor. The goal of EtherCalc was therefore to overcome this performance problem and create a spreadsheet really designed for real-time collaboration .
It's creator is Audrey Tang, the digital minister in charge of social relation of Taiwan. The work was built on Dan Bricklin's work on WikiCalc and their work together on SocialCalc,[7][8] as well as heading Traditional Chinese translation efforts for various open source-related books.[9]
Ethercalc is easily installable with the ethercalc package in a docker.[10]
