MetaTrader 5, also known as MT5, is the multi-asset electronic trading platform that replaces MetaTrader 4. It was developed by MetaQuotes Software and released in June 2010.[1] MetaTrader 5 is a multifunctional platform that offers stock & commodities trading and allows the creation of multiple accounts with multiple brokers.

The platform offers built-in trading robots, a database of copy trading developers, and virtual hosting service. The interface of the platform is available in 31 languages, the platform is free of charge for users of the broker.[2]

MetaTrader 5 is available for Microsoft Windows users, the client can also be installed on MacOS via Wine[3] or via a web browser terminal. The mobile version of the platform has been released on Android and iOS.

History

In February 2011 it was announced the integration of FxWire Pro into MT4 and MT5, a Forex newsfeed service from the International Business Times.[4]

In January 2012, MetaTrader 5 received certification and ISV status from Singapore Mercantile Exchange (SMX).[5]

In the middle of April 2012, MetaTrader 5 Trading Platform has been certified on the Dubai Gold and Commodities Exchange (DGCX) and granted Independent Software (IS) status on the exchange.[6]

Later in May 2012, was announced a MetaTrader 5 integration with Integral's FX Grid which connects market participants with major sources of FX liquidity.[7]

In January–February 2013 MetaTrader 5 received certification from Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME)[8] & Warsaw Stock Exchange (WSE).[9]

In March 2014, MetaTrader 5 was updated to add trading signal integration to the platform, allowing users to view performance and other strategic information.[10]

In October 2015 the integration of MetaTrader 5 with the Middle East's Borsa Istanbul (BIST) has been completed.[11]

In early 2016, MetaTrader 5 announced a connectivity gateway to integrate with Interactive Brokers (NYSE:IBKR), opening access to the U.S. broker's portfolio of stocks, futures, and exchange-traded products.[12]

At the end of December 2017, new tools were added to MetaTrader 5: synthetic instruments, shared projects, and MQL5 Cloud Protector, which were not previously available in MetaTrader 4.[13]

In March 2018, UK-based brokerage firm ActivTrades announced the migration of MetaTrader 4 and MetaTrader 5 to the IBM Cloud.[14]

In December 2019, MetaQuotes integrated SumSub's KYC/AML services into MetaTrader 5 to enable the validation of client personal data and documents.[15]

In late June 2020, MetaTrader 5 collaborated with Cloudflare to protect the platform from DDoS attacks and improve network performance.[16]

Later in December 2020, it was announced that MetaTrader 5 will become the all-in-one core of the Pakistan Mercantile Exchange (PMEX).[17]

Components

  • Main trading server - a server to manage the entire platform by the administrator.
  • Trade servers - those are intended for storing and managing all client and trade databases.
  • Access Server - access servers are both proxy servers and firewalls of the platform. They inspect client connections, collect authorization information, and route client connections.
  • History server - intended for getting, processing, storing, and sending to other system components price data, news and updates.
  • Redundant server - intended for backing up the history server and trading servers.
  • Data sources - platform components in the form of separate executable files, which allow receiving news and quote information from different providers.
  • Gateways - are needed to integrate with ECN and exchanges. The gateways allow outputting trading operations into external trading systems and broadcast quotes and news from them.
  • Terminal for administration - used for remote management of the platform. It allows to change any of its settings, and manage databases of clients and trade operations.
  • Manager terminal - used for working with the broker's clients: database management, trade operations management, reporting, and risk management.
  • Client terminal for Windows - trader's tool to analyze quotes, make trades, implement algorithmic trading, and strategy testing.
  • Mobile terminal for iOS - allows managing a trading account, view charts, and trade through iPhone or iPad.[18]
  • Mobile terminal for Android - allows managing a trading account, view charts, and trade through smartphones and tablets under Android.[19]
  • WebTerminal - allows to trade in the financial markets using a web browser.
  • MetaTrader 5 API - a set of tools for integration with market places, back-office, and platform customization.

Differences between MetaTrader 4 and MetaTrader 5

Both platforms enable forex trading & providing traders with tools to make trading decisions. MT5 allows to trade stocks, CFDs, and futures in addition to forex.[20]

Despite the fact that MetaTrader 5 is an upgrade of the trading platform, users have noted that MetaTrader 4 is still the platform of choice for forex brokers given that MT5 is a 64-bit platform whereas MT4 is 32-bit.[21]

On January 12, 2018, MetaQuotes has made an announcement, stating that it will no longer sell the MetaTrader 4 Trading Platform.[22]

Finance Magnates also noted that 91.4% of FX volume was generated by MetaTrader 4 in the third quarter of 2019.[23]

Key Features

MQL5 language

MetaTrader 5 uses a programming language called MQL5 as opposed to the MQL4 used by MetaTrader 4. MQL5 language allows black box programming of trading robots and other expert advisors.[24]

Algorithmic trading & backtesting

MetaTrader 5 is possible to use for algorithmic trading by using ready-made or custom developments. The platform has the option to use the Python language with an API containing libraries for machine learning, process automation along with data analysis and visualization.[25] The capabilities of the MQL5 library allow the implementation of fuzzy logic in a trading algorithm.[26]

MT5 terminal can test an automated trading system over a past time period with various methods for simulating the price changes. There is a feature to test a range of the parameters used by the Expert Advisor in order to identify the combination of parameters for a backtesting period.[27]

Expert Advisors and ready-made solutions

The MT5 platform includes components to create, test, optimize and run automated trading. EAs are used to automate the analysis of forex and CFDs.[28]

Object-oriented capabilities of MQL5 help to create classes and functions for common trading operations, such as opening, closing, and managing orders, classes and functions for money management, trailing stops, trade timers, and indicators.[29]

Data Source

MetaTrader 5 platform provides FX data for historical periods of more than 10 years in all time frames.[30]

Products

MQL5.community

MQL5.community is a community of traders and developers of trading robots, launched in 2010.[31] MQL5.com gives access to services, including the online store of MQL5 applications, the signals database available for copy trading, and the Quotes section containing data on futures, financial, and stock markets.

MQL5 Cloud Network

MQL5 Cloud Network in MetaTrader 5 allows optimization and backtesting of strategies using the computing resources deployed by other MT5 global users.[32]

Finteza

Finteza is an advertising and analytics service launched by MetaQuotes in November 2018. The distinctive features of Finteza are the absence of data sampling, real-time data acquisition, and automatic traffic quality measurement.[33]

MetaTrader 5 for hedge funds

The hedge fund version of the platform was released in 2020 for asset management of funds and family offices using algorithmic trading. The features of the platform were the use of automated solutions based on artificial intelligence.[34]
