Meteostat is an open source platform which provides free and unrestricted access to meteorological data. The project's focus is historical weather and climate data.[1]
Interfaces
Meteostat features multiple interfaces which provide data access for both end users and developers:
- Website with data visualizations
- Bulk data dumps of individual weather stations published under the CC BY-NC 4.0 license[2]
- Python library developed under the MIT License[3]
- JSON API[4]
History
Developer Christian Lamprecht started working on Meteostat in 2015. Version 1.0 of the project's Python library was published in December 2020.[5]
As of June 2022 the Meteostat Python library is downloaded about 22,000 times per month.[6]
Technology
Most of Meteostat's software used for data processing is written in Python. The project's website uses TypeScript and Vue.js.
