Software:OpenSync Framework

From HandWiki

OpenSync is an open source software agent that can be added to networking gear to enable management. It is designed for Wi-Fi capable home networking providers.[1]

History

In 2018, OpenSync was developed by Samsung, Plume, Comcast, Bell Canada, and Liberty Global as a hardware agnostic initiative to improve cloud interconnection to networking devices.[2][3] The cloud agnostic software[1] has been ported onto different gateway and extender devices to provide a complete management and service enabling solution for all network devices.[4][5][6] It unifies cloud monitoring and control of all devices on a home network.[7][8]

The cloud to device communications framework, designed as a modifiable, open source system, also enables a hardware device to connect to broadband services, independent of manufacturer.[1][6][9] When deployed by a service provider, OpenSync connects all networking devices to the cloud. It is used by providers and vendors that include Comcast,[3][8] Charter,[10] Samsung,[8] Bell Canada,[3] Liberty Global,[3] Technicolor,[6] and Qualcomm.[11] It has also been adopted into RDK-B, the Reference Design Kit for Broadband.[12]

As of February 2021, OpenSync was being used by Wi-Fi access points in 25 million homes[9] and the software was pre-loaded in 20 different Wi-Fi 6 CPE devices.[1][9] The devices are from vendors such as ADTRAN, Askey, CIG, Hitron, Kaon, Sagemcom, Sercomm, Technicolor, and Zyxel Communications.[13][1] Any device using OpenSync can connect to the cloud and use the software’s services to unify cloud monitoring and control of all devices on a home network.[1]
