Software:Shape Shifter (video game)

From HandWiki

Shape Shifter is a platform side-scrolling action game that includes some role-playing game elements, developed by ICOM Simulations Inc and published by Turbo Technologies Inc for the PC Engine and Turobgrafx-16 cd add-on in 1992. This game requires either a TurboDuo console or Turbografx-CD unit with the Super CD System 3.0 card in order to play.[1]

Gameplay

In this game the player takes control of a barbarian named Lykos, who has the ability to transform into different creatures. These creatures include a panther, shark, golem, and golden dragon. The player must traverse through the games 16 areas, defeating 12 bosses in order to win the game. The player starts out in the hub world, the city of Treyhelm. In the hub, the player can purchase weapons, armor, advice, as well as restore health and save the game. The player starts out with a simple kick attack. Additional attacks can be added by purchasing and upgrading weapons. Each weapon can be upgraded a total of three times to increase the amount of damage dealt toward enemies.

The player can shape shift at will as long as the player has collected enough gems to initiate the transformation. The amount of gems the player has, determines how long the player can stay in the selected form. Another unique concept added to the game is the lunar cycle. In the HUD of the game, the moon's position relative to the sun is displayed. Every time an eclipse happens, lightning strikes the player to restore all health.[2]

Reception

Upon release, TurboPlay magazine gave the game 8 out of 10 stars. The magazine praised the appealing and detailed graphics, as well as the high quality CD audio soundtrack. However, the magazine was critical of the simple gameplay and weak story.[3]
