vjoon K4 is a crossmedia editorial system with an integrated workflow management system from the Hamburg-based company vjoon GmbH (until September 2008 SoftCare GmbH [2]), which was first introduced in 1999.[3]

vjoon K4 is mainly used in magazine production, but also by newspapers, advertising agencies, corporate publishing, and book production companies. In 2006, more than 160 systems and over 10,000 workstations were sold, in 2009: more than 350 systems, more than 17,000 workstations, and the 600th system worldwide was installed in 2017. The installation size ranges from 2 to 1,400 workstations. The software enables content of all kinds to be managed in an efficient way, and then to be prepared and delivered across different media [4]. In addition, vjoon K4 enables users to edit layouts and texts simultaneously, assign them to users, track their status, and notify users if changes have been made to the layout, articles, images, or ads currently being edited [5] [6]. vjoon K4 integrates the standard programs Adobe InDesign and Adobe InCopy on the basis of a long-term partnership with Adobe Inc. [7]. In addition, any other file types can be integrated into a separate workflow.

Architecture

The central element of vjoon K4 is a database server, which manages all publication settings and user rights. It is accessible via a web browser. As a modular system, vjoon K4 can be linked to solutions for ad planning, page layout, image databases, and others.

vjoon K4 supports macOS and Windows as clients [8] The database software is available for macOS X, Windows, Linux. For working at remote locations, either a VPN connection or a Web Client (K4 Content Portal, K4 Overview, K4 KickOff) can be used. The vjoon Storage Engine enables agile data management. With the vjoon Storage Engine, the production environment can be kept either in your own IT infrastructure or in the cloud, for example in the object storage of Amazon S3 by Amazon Web Services [9].
