In Islam, Raising hands in Dua (Arabic: رفع اليدين في الدعاء) is the action of using hands to invoke Allah in dua.
Presentation
Raising the hands for dua is a sunnah and a mustahabb act of ibadah done by Muslims after fardh salah. When making a supplication, the Muslim should raise his hands with humility to Allah and do it in the way instructed by Muhammad.
Misconducts
In few cases, Raising the hands in Dua is regarded as a forbidden action (Bidʻah) and should not be done during:[1]
- Salah (in specific cases)
- Khutbah (in specific cases)
- Tawaf
- Sa'iye
- Ruku
- Standing up from Ruku
- Sujud
- Sitting in salah
Types
There are two ways to raise the hands to perform the Dua:
- With both hands.
- With just one index finger: This was done when the Prophet Muhammad was giving advices, when he was performing a Khutbah on the minbar.
