Wiseana umbraculatus, also known as the bog porina, is a species of moth belonging to the family Hepialidae.[2] It was described by Achille Guenée in 1868 under the name Pielus umbraculatus from specimens collected by Richard William Fereday.[3] This species is endemic to New Zealand.[4] It was regarded as being common in Whanganui in the early twentieth century.[5]

The wingspan is 38–50 mm for males and 49–66 mm for females. Forewing colour varies, but is usually fawn, pinkish fawn or infuscate. The hindwings are pinkish-fawn to yellow-fawn. Adults are on wing from September to April.[6]

Food plants for the larvae include species of grass. The larvae of W. umbraculatus are regarded as a major pasture pest.[7]
