Engineering:Spreader (container)
A spreader is a device used for lifting containers and unitized cargo. The spreader is placed between the container and the lifting machine.
The spreader used for containers has a locking mechanism at each corner that attaches to the four corners of the container. A spreader can be used on a container crane, a straddle carrier and with any other machinery to lift containers. Spreader operation can be manual, semiautomatic or fully automatic.
Over the years, container handling has progressed from slings and chains to spreaders and now headblocks. A headblock allows container terminal operators to use two spreaders at the same time (tandem). In doing this, the crane operator has the power to lift 2 x 20ft|40ft|45ft or 4 x 20ft ISO containers. RAM Spreader's SingFlex headblock can go from single spreader to twin spreader in 90 seconds with the simple push of a button. The process is done autonomously without any manual intervention. This container handling system is designed to boost port productivity, whilst reducing energy demand and costs.
