The species is named in honour of Johann Jakob von Tschudi.[3] There are two subspecies: M. t. tschudii and M. t. olssoni.[4]

M. t. tschudii are fairly small, with adults usually growing between 45 and 55 centimetres in length. They are known to prey on lizards and colubrid snakes.[3]
