Meteostat is an open source platform which provides free and unrestricted access to meteorological data. The project's focus is historical weather and climate data.[1]

Interfaces

Meteostat features multiple interfaces which provide data access for both end users and developers:

  • Website with data visualizations
  • Bulk data dumps of individual weather stations published under the CC BY-NC 4.0 license[2]
  • Python library developed under the MIT License[3]
  • JSON API[4]

History

Developer Christian Lamprecht started working on Meteostat in 2015. Version 1.0 of the project's Python library was published in December 2020.[5]

As of June 2022 the Meteostat Python library is downloaded about 22,000 times per month.[6]

Technology

Most of Meteostat's software used for data processing is written in Python. The project's website uses TypeScript and Vue.js.
