AV1 is a telepresence robot developed by the Norway startup company No Isolation, based in Oslo. It's an avatar for children and young adults with long-term illness, which enables them to take part in class and communicate with friends.[1][2]

The child can see and hear the teacher and classmates, and the rotating head offers a 360-degree view of the class. The AV1’s head flashes blue when the child wants to ask a question, and there is a whispering mode that enables the child to speak with a lower voice.[3][4][5]

Use

AV1 is controlled through an app for iOS and Android with tapping and swiping gestures. The features include 'raising your hand' (the robot's head will start blinking)[6][7], signaling a wish for passive attendance (the robot's head will turn solid blue), and a whispering mode.[6]

Specifications

The robot has the dimensions 26.8 cm x 17.5 cm x 12.9 cm, and weighs about 1 kilogram. The battery lasts about 8 hours. The camera has 13 megapixels, with a 77.6 degrees angle and autofocus. The robot can rotate 360 degrees and 40 degrees up and down. AV1 has built-in WiFi and 4G support.[6]
