In April 2026, the Namibia University of Science and Technology (NUST) announced that Gideon had been appointed as its substantive vice-chancellor, with effect from the start of August 2026.[1] Before the appointment, he served at the University of Namibia, including as pro-vice chancellor for academic affairs and dean of the Faculty of Science.[2]

NUST vice-chancellor selection litigation

In April 2026, The Namibian reported that the Namibia University of Science and Technology had appointed Gideon as its vice-chancellor, following a recruitment process in which he was shortlisted alongside National Commission on Research, Science and Technology chief executive Anicia Peters.[3] Gideon had more than 25 years of academic experience. He succeeded Andrew Niikondo, who had served as acting vice-chancellor since October 2025.[4]

Gideon was previously a candidate for the NUST vice-chancellor position in 2020.[5] In 2022, the Windhoek High Court dismissed his application to review and set aside NUST's decision to appoint Erold Naomab ahead of him as vice-chancellor.[6][7] During the case, Gideon argued that the appointment decision should be set aside, while NUST argued that its council had considered the relevant information before appointing Naomab.[8]
