Marion Leboyer (born 1957) is a French psychiatrist and senior public-sector health professional (professeur des universités – praticien hospitalier (fr)). She is an oft-cited contributor to French public debates about mental health, not least in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic.[1][2]
Family and education
Leboyer is the niece of Frédérick Leboyer, a prominent obstetrician.[3] She studied medicine at Paris Descartes University and at Yale School of Medicine (under Kenneth Kidd) before completing her Ph.D. in Neuroscience in 1990 at Pierre and Marie Curie University in Paris.[4]
Work
Leboyer teaches at Paris-Est Créteil University and leads the psychiatry and addiction medicine practice at Centre hospitalier universitaire Henri-Mondor (fr) near Paris. Her academic work has focused on bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, obsessive–compulsive disorder and high-functioning autism.[5]
She is also the founding Executive Director of Fondation FondaMental (fr), a French nonprofit that fosters collaborative research on mental health issues that was created in 2007 by the French Ministry of Health.[5]
In 2009, Leboyer became a member of the Haut Conseil de la science et de la technologie (fr), at the time the main government advisory body in France on public research strategy.[6]
As of January 2021, Leboyer had authored or coauthored 480 peer-reviewed international publications.[7]
Public advocacy
Leboyer has been vocal in the public debate about mental health in France. She has criticized French psychiatric practices for their lack of specialized expertise.[8] She has also been instrumental in the creation of national networks of expert treatment facilities and multidisciplinary initiatives to address bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, treatment-resistant depression and high-functioning autism. She has promoted efforts to provide quantitative assessments of the indirect cost of mental health challenges to the French economy, e.g. in her book Psychiatrie : L'Etat d'urgence co-authored in 2018 with fellow psychiatrist Pierre-Michel Llorca.[9]
