Matthew Yip, also known as Prof. Mathewmatician, is a Hong Kong–based mathematics educator, author, and Mathematics Olympiad trainer.[1][2] He is the founder of the Top Mathematics Education Centre and the developer of the Mathewmatician's Dictionary, an automated mathematics-learning system that integrates textbooks, exercises, lectures, and assessments into a single step-by-step curriculum.[3][4]

Early life and education

Yip was born and raised in Hong Kong, where he developed an interest in mathematics as a teenager, enjoying complex problem-solving and helping classmates work through difficult equations.[2] He began private and group mathematics tutoring while at university, partly to support himself amid family financial constraints, as his father worked as a bus driver and his mother was a homemaker.[2] He earned a bachelor's degree at Hong Kong Baptist University, majoring in mathematics with a minor in information technology, and is a registered teacher with the Hong Kong Education Bureau.[5]

Career

Yip began teaching during his university years through private and group tutoring.[2] He later taught mathematics across academic levels from kindergarten and primary school through master's-degree courses, and has reported instructing in more than seventy schools.[1] He is the founder of the Top Mathematics Education Centre, an education institute based in Mong Kok, Hong Kong, through which he develops curricula and assessment programmes.[6] Yip has also been described as President of the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute at the International (Macau) Institute of Academic Research and as Executive President of the Asia International Mathematical Research Association, and he founded the Global Mathematics and Mathematics Olympiad Graded Assessment Test with Competition.[5]

Mathewmatician's Dictionary

Yip is the developer of the Mathewmatician's Dictionary, an automated mathematics-learning system that combines textbooks, exercises, lectures, and assessments so that a student cannot progress to the next topic until every problem in the current one is solved, allowing learners to work at their own pace.[3][4] The system underpins the EdTech approach of his Top Mathematics Education Centre.[2]

Recognition

Yip has been the subject of media and business-magazine features that describe him, under the nickname "Prof. Mathewmatician", as an award-winning mathematics educator.[7][2] A December 2024 press release reported that Yip, a licensed primary and secondary mathematics teacher and distinguished professor, had set several world records between August and December 2024, including one described as "the licensed primary and secondary math teacher who has set the most world records in the field of primary and secondary education".[17] His professional profiles further claim more than fifty international awards and honours and speaking engagements including a TEDx talk, "Revolution in Mathematics Education", delivered at TEDxNIELIT Aurangabad.[5][18]
