Mostafa Elsayed Sherbiny Elsayed (Arabic: مصطفى الشربيني; born 2 November 1966), known professionally as Mostafa Sherbiny, is an Egyptian sustainability consultant and ESG expert. He is the President and Chief Executive Officer of the Institute of Sustainability and Carbon Footprint (ISCF), an assurance and carbon verification body operating across sixteen countries.
Sherbiny chairs the Scientific Chair for Carbon Footprint and Sustainability at the Arab League Educational, Cultural and Scientific Organization (ALECSO), holds the rank of Official Observer to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), and has served as a European Climate Pact Ambassador for Egypt since 2022.[1] He is the founder of the Climate Ambassadors Initiative, a partnership registered with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals platform.[2]
He is the author of the eight volume Encyclopedia of Carbon Neutrality (موسوعة الحياد الكربوني), published between 2022 and 2025, described as the first comprehensive Arabic language reference series on carbon accounting and carbon neutrality.
Early life and education
Sherbiny was born in Cairo, Egypt, on 2 November 1966.[3] He graduated from Cairo University in 1989 with a Bachelor of Commerce in accounting, and later undertook management studies at the Sadat Academy for Management Sciences.
His early career was in accounting and auditing rather than environmental science, a background that later shaped his approach to carbon measurement as a form of financial-style verification.[4]
Career
Professional credentials
Sherbiny is a Certified Public Accountant accredited by Egypt's Ministry of Finance. He holds the FSA Credential issued by the IFRS Foundation, which covers the standards of the International Sustainability Standards Board, and is certified as a lead auditor by the International Register of Certificated Auditors (IRCA) of the Chartered Quality Institute. He is also an accredited international trainer under CPD-UK.
Institute of Sustainability and Carbon Footprint
Sherbiny serves as President and Chief Executive Officer of the Institute of Sustainability and Carbon Footprint, which operates alongside the International Expertise House for Environmental and Social Sustainability. The organisation provides ESG reporting assurance, carbon footprint verification and professional certification, with teams in Egypt, the United States and the United Kingdom, and a stated reach across sixteen countries in the Arab region, Africa and Europe.
Under his leadership the institute was accredited as a Validation and Verification Body, giving it standing to conduct independent carbon verification engagements.
Areas of practice
Sherbiny's technical work covers greenhouse gas quantification and reporting under the Greenhouse Gas Protocol and ISO 14064; product level carbon footprint measurement under ISO 14067 and life-cycle assessment; compliance with the European Union Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM); sustainability disclosure under IFRS S1 and S2 and the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive and its ESRS standards; carbon market mechanisms under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement; water footprint accounting; and climate risk assessment.
ALECSO Scientific Chair
He chairs the ALECSO Scientific Chair for Carbon Footprint and Sustainability, the Arab League body concerned with carbon measurement standards and sustainability capacity building across the Arab States.
Climate Ambassadors Initiative
Sherbiny founded and leads the Climate Ambassadors Initiative, registered as a partnership on the United Nations SDG platform.[2] The initiative reports having trained more than 3,100 climate professionals and delivered over 2,000 awareness events and capacity building seminars, and has established a Climate Ambassadors Summer School.
He has founded three further UN registered SDG partnerships: the Carbon Neutral Pioneers Initiative, which works with organisations pursuing verified carbon neutrality; the Auditors and Experts Initiative for Sustainability and Climate Risk Assessment; and the Water Footprint Pioneers Initiative.
International climate policy
As a UNFCCC Official Observer, Sherbiny attends the United Nations Climate Change Conferences (COP) and the intersessional meetings of the subsidiary bodies in Bonn. He has participated in United Nations working groups on climate adaptation, climate finance, health and climate, and the new collective quantified goal for post-2025 climate finance.[5]
He has published expert commentary on the negotiations, including an analysis of the expected outcomes of the 2025 Bonn Climate Change Conference.[6][7] His carbon neutrality work was covered in Egyptian press during COP29.[8]
Publications
Encyclopedia of Carbon Neutrality
Sherbiny is the author and principal architect of the Encyclopedia of Carbon Neutrality, published in eight volumes between 2022 and 2025 and running to more than 3,000 pages. It is described as the first comprehensive Arabic language reference series on the subject and is used by governments, corporations and training institutions in the Arab region. The volumes are:
