Param Singh MBE (Punjabi: ਪਰਮ ਸਿੰਘ) (born in London, England) is a British business and technology executive, philanthropist and reality television personality [1] and has worked for various companies including the Ford Motor Company, Rolls-Royce, Sainsbury's and Accenture.[2] He was appointed Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in the 2019 New Years Honours [3]
Career
Singh has worked with Internet startup companies since 2011 [4] after launching an online 'find a lawyer' website similar to trip advisor [5]
He is a founding member and spokesperson for City Sikhs which is a charity representing the interests of British Sikh professionals.[6]
During the 2015 general election Singh was one of 5000 professionals supporting David Cameron and the Conservative economic policy.[7]
In 2018 he was part of a delegation of city professionals attending 10 Downing Street to promote a mentoring project spearheaded by Lord Gadhia.[8]
He followed in his grandfather's footsteps by studying Mechanical Engineering at the University of Sheffield.[9]
In 2019, Singh was featured in a six part BBC 2 British comedy show called The Ranganation as one of 25 people representing modern Britain. The show was hosted by Romesh Ranganathan with guests sharing their humorous experiences in life.[10][11]
Awards and recognition
- Jul 2019: Awarded 'Man of the Year' at the British Indian Awards.[12][13]
- Jan 2019: Appointed a Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (MBE) and received the honour at Buckingham Palace from Queen Elizabeth II.[14]
- Nov 2018: Honoured with an 'Inspiring Individual' award at the Faith and Belief Community Awards from the Lord-Lieutenant of Greater London, Sir Kenneth Olisa OBE.[15]
- Sep 2017: Finalist in the London Asian Business Awards in the 'Young Entrepreneur of the Year' category.[16]
- Oct 2012: Finalist for the Gold Award for Achievement in community service at the 12th Asian Achievers Awards hosted by Asian Voice.[17]
Personal life
In 2019 he was barred from entering venues in Vienna whilst on holiday with his Asian friends due to a suspected case of racial discrimination.[18]
In 2013 he became the first Sikh to appear on the dating show Take Me Out [19][20][21] In 2018 he appeared in a 10th anniversary Take Me Out special.[22]
Family
Singh's grandfather Professor Sunder Singh was the first Sikh to graduate in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Sheffield in 1932. Professor Singh established a number of Engineering institutions in Lahore, Punjab and Gujarat including Lukhdhirji Engineering College on the request of H.H. Maharaja Shri Sir Lukhdhirji Waghji Sahib of Morvi in 1951.[23]
Views
Singh appears in the media to talk about the experience of British Asians in dating, diversity and interfaith related matters.[24][25] He is also an advocate for healthy lifestyles, yoga, qigong, veganism and entrepreneurship and has worked with 3HO founded by Harbhajan Singh Khalsa [26] and Initiatives of change.
