Biology:Apheloria

From HandWiki

Apheloria is a genus of flat-backed millipedes in the family Xystodesmidae,[1][2] occurring in the central and southeastern United States, and ranging as far north as southern Quebec, Canada.[3][4] They are aposematically colored in black and contrasting reds and yellows, and some species in the Appalachian Mountains resemble species of Brachoria where they co-occur, a phenomenon known as Müllerian mimicry.[5] The genus was first described by Ralph Vary Chamberlin in 1921.[6][7]

Species

The following species belong to the genus Apheloria:[7]

  • Apheloria corrugata (Wood, 1864)
  • Apheloria montana (Bollman, 1887)
  • Apheloria polychroma Marek, Means & Hennen, 2018
  • Apheloria uwharrie Marek, Means, Hennen & Tingley, 2025
  • Apheloria virginiensis (Drury, 1770)
  • Apheloria whiteheadi (Shelley, 1986)

Some authorities list Apheloria montezumae (Attems, 1899) as also being placed in the genus.[1][2]

Species previously placed in the genus Apheloria include:

  • Apheloria luminosa Kenyon, 1893 In 2025 Marek, Means, Hennen & Tingley removed this species from the genus Apheloria and synonymised it with Pleuroloma flavipes.[7]
  • Apheloria tigana Chamberlin, 1939 In 2025 Marek, Means, Hennen & Tingley synonymised this species with Apheloria virginiensis.[7]
