Polypedates chlorophthalmus is a species of frogs in the family Rhacophoridae. It is endemic to Borneo where it is only known from its type locality on Mount Murud in Sarawak at 1,351 m (4,432 ft) above sea level.[2][3] The specific name refers to its "remarkable green iris", from the Greek for "green-eyed".[4] Accordingly, the common name green-eyed tree frog has been coined for the species.[3]
Description
This species is only known from the holotype, a gravid female, 62 mm (2.4 in) in snout–vent length.[4][3] The body is elongate. The dorsum is brown, with a thin dark gray line at back of the forehead. The lower flanks and anterior edge of thighs have dark blotches. The throat has dark pigmentation. The tympanum is distinct. The iris is bright green—which is unique among the south-east Asian species of Polypedates. The toes are webbed but fingers lack webbing.[4]
Habitat and conservation
The holotype was collected from vegetation above a granite boulder at the edge of a stream.[4] The type locality, despite its remoteness, was logged a few months after the collection. It is not known whether the species exists elsewhere, but presumably it has a wider distribution.[1]
