Big Rock Creative is an event production company, founded in 2020 by Greg Edwards, Athena Demos, and Doug Jacobson for the purpose of creating virtual entertainment events. Big Rock Creative's first event produced was BRCvr, a virtual version of the annual, in-person Burning Man event which was canceled in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

BRCvr

BRCvr was one of the eight official virtual multiverses[1] created for Burning Man participants in lieu of a physical event in 2020. In keeping with the traditional principles and culture of Burning Man,[2] Big Rock Creative invited veteran participants, known as "Burners" to contribute to the creation of BRCvr.[3] Participant contributions included virtual art, virtual structures,[4] theme camp worlds, as well as live talks, classes and performances hosted within the many interconnected worlds of BRCvr.[5] The result was a week of virtual events that united seasoned Burners, and many first-timers, in celebration.[6]

After the completion of the official Burning Man events held in BRCvr during the event week of August 30 to September 6, 2020,[7] Big Rock Creative moved on to produce other immersive entertainment events, like social mixer events for WonderCon[8] and SXSW. In early 2021, Big Rock Creative received industry recognition for BRCvr with an Innovation Award from the Producers Guild of America.

Platform

The team at Big Rock Creative primarily uses AltspaceVR, a division of Microsoft, as the venue for their virtual events.[9] They also regularly stream live performances into viewing screens within AltspaceVR worlds.

AltspaceVR is a 3D immersive application designed to be accessed via a headset device such as Oculus Quest. Additionally, there are 2D versions of the AltspaceVR app created for PC[10] and Mac users. The team at Big Rock Creative works closely with the people of Microsoft to further development and improve user experience within AltspaceVR. The Mac compatible app for AltspaceVR was created at the request of Big Rock Creative specifically for the BRCvr event.[11]
