BioSlimDisk Signature device with open lid and rubber coating removed manually

BioSlimDisk is a product line of biometric USB storage devices produced and marketed by Ritech. The Signature devices have a separate lid that protects the static fingerprint sensor. The IDEA device has a slider cap that protects its stripe fingerprint sensor. The Signature devices are available in slightly different configurations: Signature Lite (Standard version), Signature (with self-destruct) and Signature Enterprise (with manageability). They have a rubber coating in common which after some time gets unpleasantly sticky but prevents that fingerprints can be taken off the device easily. The IDEA devices aren't coated.

Manufacturer's security statement

The biometric USB hardware is encryption coupled with dual fingerprint authentication methodology to prevent crackers bypassing the encryption. Dual fingerprint authentication function increases the difficulty for crackers and prevents access from the outside into the secured non-volatile internal memory storage. Signature is designed so that the encryption key is stored randomly in the flash memory. If it were cracked, a self destruct feature will trigger it to reformat and destroy all data stored in the device.[1][2][3][4][5]

Hacker's security statement

At least the Signature devices use a weak inter-chip protocol: The device does properly encrypt the data but an attacker with some soldering and some basic IO and coding abilities is able to tell the device that it received two valid fingerprints thus allowing access to the encrypted data.[6]
