GIRO Inc. (Le Groupe en Informatique et Recherche Opérationnelle) is a software development company based in Montreal.[1][2] It provides solutions for public transit, electric buses, rail operations, on-demand transport, and postal operations. GIRO's product portfolio includes HASTUS, their modular software for public transit operations, and GeoRoute, their routing software for postal operations.

HASTUS is used for planning and managing over 100 passenger rail networks around the world, including: SNCF (Transilien[3][4] and national TGV[5]) in France; MTA in New York; LA Metro[6] in Los Angeles for subway and LRT services; Keolis Commuter Services[7] in Greater Boston; Queensland Rail in Australia; Arriva for national services in Denmark and Sweden; RATP for the Paris Metro[8]; and Yarra Trams in Australia.

History

Early history

GIRO was founded in 1979 by Jean-Yves Blais, a computer science student, and Jean-Marc Rousseau, a programmer.[9] The company is a spin-off of work that was carried out as part of a joint research project between the Centre de recherche sur les transports (CRT; English: Transportation Research Center) at the Université de Montréal and the Société de transport de la communauté urbaine de Montréal (STCUM; English: Montreal Urban Community Transit Corporation).[10] The founders developed the software HASTUS to evaluate the impact of changes to the Montreal bus drivers' collective agreement. Their work was later extended to include driver schedules, vehicle schedules, and mail delivery routes. GIRO's first clients were the public transport agencies of Montreal and Quebec City.

Recent history

In 2012, the Société de transport de Montréal (STM; English: Montreal Transit Corporation) awarded GIRO contracts to upgrade HASTUS, which it uses to plan and manage bus and metro operations.[11]

In 2013, the Regensburger Verkehrsbetriebe GmbH (RVB) in Bavaria, Germany, purchased HASTUS vehicle and crew scheduling as well as optimization software modules for its bus services.[12]

In 2018, SNCF selected GIRO and the French company Sopra Steria to deploy HASTUS, including modules for operations management as well as rolling-stock and crew scheduling, for planning and operations of its Transilien network in the Paris region.[13] The system for SNCF is considered one of the most extensive HASTUS installations in the world.

In 2019, GIRO opened its first European office in Lyon.[14]
