ImagineFun is a company known for utilizing Minecraft to make recreations of real world theme parks, specifically known for its application of the game to recreate the Disneyland resort. As of 2022, ImagineFun operates the number one largest Minecraft theme park in existence, hosting over 390,000 unique guests over three years.[1] It's most notable for its innovative use of Minecraft to capture and preserve the real theme park in detail using 3D modeling technology as well as its unprecedented growth as a direct result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

History

ImagineFun was founded in 2018 by a small group of high school students.[1] Over the course of the following two years, it was stagnant in growth. In May 2019, the company celebrated its 10th attraction opening with their Haunted Mansion recreation.[2] After the COVID-19 pandemic began in March of 2020, a variety of videos on multiple social media platforms sparked interest among the broader Disney and Amusement park community. One such video would garner over 6 millions views in just 48 hours.[2] This resulted in one of the largest influxes of players over a 24 hour period in the history of Minecraft, effectively creating a DDOS attack with real people.[3] Since then, it has gone on to become the largest Minecraft Theme Park ever created with over 40 unique attractions from the real Disneyland Resort.[4]

The first ImagineFun Newswire premiered on October 3rd, 2020. It kickstarted an online web-series in which the creators showcase upcoming features, products, and attractions.

In October 2021, the company hosted its second major Halloween event. This event revolutionized how future events would take place in the virtual world, creating a token system that allowed players to ride attractions and use a loot box system to obtain rare and exclusive items. In November 2021, the company hosted their first holiday celebration in the same fashion.

Features

The project's main draw is its various attractions, all based off of real attractions from Disneyland and Disney California Adventure in Anaheim, California. This includes all of the main lands such as Fantasyland, Tomorrowland, Adventureland, and Frontierland.[5] It's most notable for its innovative use of 3D models, created using the computer program Cubik studio.[6] Users often use Discord to chat with other players in the community and learn about events.[7]

In July 2021 the project debuted a replica of the Disney-created PhotoPass system, enabling users to have their photos taken on attractions and view them after disembarking.[3]
