InternetX GmbH is a leading Germen ICANN Accredited Domain Registrar, Dedicated hosting provider and DNS operator based in Regensburg, Germany . The company was founded in 1998 and has been part of United Internet and its subgroup 1 & 1 Internet AG (IONOS) since 2004. InternetX was Founded by Hakan Ali and Curd Bems. As a direct successor to Schlund + Partner, InterNetX operates the reseller business in the field of web hosting and domains and acts as a provider in server housing.
History
InterNetX was founded in 1998 as one of the first German web hosts by Hakan Ali (Marketing and Sales) and Curd Bems (Development) in Regensburg. Right from the start, the company positioned itself as a provider for providers that enables domains and web hosting packages to be registered as a so-called white label solution.
In 1999 the first version of the platform called AutoDNS went online. This includes a multi-tenant administration interface for domains, in which customers, name servers and corresponding authorizations can also be stored.[1] At the beginning of the new millennium, InterNetX put its first own data center in Regensburg into operation.
Due to the associated growth, InterNetX opened another data center in Munich in November 2006 in cooperation with EMC HostCo GmbH.[2][3] It is connected to the backbones of 1 & 1, Global Access and Level3, among others.[4]
In December 2004 United Internet AG acquired an 80 percent stake in InterNetX,[5] the remaining shares remained with the previous shareholders. At that time, about 700,000 domains were registered with InterNetX and 500 servers were in operation. In the course of the takeover, it was announced that the entire business with resellers would be integrated under the umbrella of InterNetX.[6]
In January 2010, InterNetX was exposed to a hacker attack in which the company's name servers were overloaded and taken out of service through a distributed denial of service, although InterNetX said it had prepared itself separately against such attacks. The company was only able to resolve the attack slowly because there were not enough employees in the data center due to the holiday. The attack resulted in a loss of accessibility of almost all domains registered with InterNetX.[7]
Company growth
As the direct successor to Schlund + Partner, InterNetX operates today with the same headquarters in Regensburg for Schlund Technologies GmbH, which is one of the largest domain registrars in Germany in terms of numbers.[8][9] 1 & 1 and United Internet (IONOS) have meanwhile increased their shares in the company to 95.56 percent.[10] According to its own information, InterNetX currently has over 22,000 resellers, which makes the company the largest reseller in Central Europe. Domains are assigned, for example, for numerous sister companies of the 1 & 1 Group and the Host Europe Group, the largest private Internet provider in Europe. Due to the high market penetration of the company and its resellers, Regensburg has been identified several times as the German city with the most .de domains per capita.[11]
