History

Girish Ramdas the company's CEO, and Vijayakumar Radhakrishnan, the company's President, founded Magzter in 2011.[3] In 2010, Radhakrishnan began the development of a platform to digitally publish magazines and provide access to consumers to the magazine store's app launch in mid-2011.[1][2] In 2012, Magzter completed its Series A funding round.[4] In September 2012, Magzter was listed The Highest Grossing App in Asia on the Apple Store.[5][6]

In July 2013, the firm entered into a collaboration with Amazon's Kindle Fire and introduced books to their publishing platform in September 2013.[3][6][7][8][9][10] The company also completed its Series B funding round that year, which raised $10 million.[11][12][13][14] In early 2015, Magzter launched Magzter Gold, an all-you-can-read subscription model, similar to Netflix or Spotify, that currently provides unlimited access to over 107,000 issues of 3,750+ magazines.[15] The company also has Magzter Lite, that allows unlimited access to five titles.[16][17]

Business operations

Magzter distributes magazines from the United States, the United Kingdom, Europe, China, Hong Kong, Canada, Australia, Sri Lanka, South Africa, Indonesia, India, Thailand, the Philippines, Malaysia, and Singapore. The company works with 3,400 publishers in more than 50 languages from over 175 countries.[4][12][14]

In July 2013, the company had 50 employees.[18] The app is available on iOS and Android devices.[9] In 2015, the company added over 1,500 titles to its roster.[19] Publishers distributed by Magvii include Hearst, American Media, Inc., Newsweek, Condé Nast, Dennis Publishing, Haymarket, Media24, Edipresse, India Today Group, WorldWide Media, Black Enterprise, Singapore Press Holdings and Grupo Expansión.[20] By May 2015, Magzter had amassed over 29 million readers.[21][22] Its headquarters are located in New York and sales offices and teams are in the United Kingdom, France, Germany, South Africa, Singapore, and India.

Business model

Magzter participates in a revenue share model with publishers on magazine sales.[23][24] Publishers have the ability to add or edit advertisements from their printed editions, and receive all ad revenue.[4][25][26] The company also provides publishers with sales reports and customer contact information.[21][27] Magzter also uses an automated cloud service to upload magazines.[25]
