The company was started in 2002 by Todd Marks, who is now the chief executive officer; at first he ran it from his basement.[1] He had previously worked for a digital consultancy in Chicago.[2]

In 2013 it opened offices in Washington, D.C., New York City , and Philadelphia,[3][4] and in June 2014 moved its head office to Locust Point, Baltimore.[1] The same year it bought 4Thought, a web design, marketing, and logo design company.[5] In 2015 it moved the websites of all its clients to Pantheon.[6]

In addition to the headquarters being chosen for its convenience to employees, Mindgrub is known for being employee friendly. The office location is open space with activities for employees that include ping pong, a rock climbing wall, robotics lab, and holodeck for virtual reality apps and games.[5][7] The company was named Tech Company of the Year in 2013 by the Maryland Tech Council, one of the Best Places to Work in 2015 by Baltimore magazine, and Best Workplaces for 2017 by Inc. Magazine.[8][9] For six consecutive years in a row (2013 - 2018), Mindgrub has been one of the fastest growing companies according to the Inc. 5000 list.[10][11]

In 2014, it was featured in the American City Business Journals for its practice of giving employees a Bobblehead in their likeness after working for the company for five years.[12] SmartCEO awarded the company with a Baltimore Corporate Culture Award.[13] In 2017, Mindgrub won two NET/WORK Awards for Best Side Project and Best Office Pet - Albus the Red from Technical.ly.[14]
