History

MOD Bikes was founded in 2018 by Dor Korngold in Austin, Texas. Initially operating on a small scale, expanded its product line and opened a dedicated design facility. MOD designs bicycles in Austin and production takes place overseas.[3][4]

Commuter and folding models

The company’s commuter lineup includes urban-oriented bicycles designed for short- to medium-distance travel. Folding variants are intended to improve portability and storage in dense urban environments.[5]

MOD BIKES manufactures cargo-oriented e-bikes designed to carry passengers or goods.[6] Among these is the MOD Easy SideCar, which incorporates a single-wheel sidecar attached to the bicycle frame.[7][8][9]

Class 1 models and health-focused purchasing

In 2026, the company introduced dedicated Class 1 pedal-assist models (limited to 20 mph (32 km/h) without a throttle), aligning with regulations that allow broader access to bike paths and trails in many jurisdictions.

The company has also partnered with health-financing platforms, enabling some customers to purchase e-bikes using Health Savings Accounts (HSA) or Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA).[10]

Reception

MOD BIKES has participated in Austin’s cultural and technology events. In March 2024, the company presented updated models during the South by Southwest (SXSW) festival, adding torque-sensing pedal assist and UL-certified batteries.[6][11]

Some independent reviewers praised the motor, torque sensor, and braking system, but have also criticized the weight, complexity of assembly, and decreased maneuverability when utilizing the sidecar.[12][13]
