Perlego is an online e-textbook library with access to over 200,000 academic and professional titles, headquartered in London, United Kingdom. The online learning platform offers a subscription-based service[1] providing unlimited access to all textbooks and publications on its platform. The company works directly with publishers to gain access to digital versions of their textbooks and host them on their platform.[2][3][4]

History

Founded in the second half of 2016 by Gauthier Van Malderen and Matthew Davis,[5] Perlego was designed as a solution to the ever-increasing prices of university textbooks.[6][7] Perlego initially raised £850,000 in Seed funding from 6 different investors, including Simon Franks (co-founder of LoveFilm and Redbus) in 2016.[8][9] It launched the Beta-version of its website in the UK at the start of 2017 with 65,000 titles initially.[10] By July 4, 2017, Perlego had acquired over 200,000 titles on its platform from publishers including Bloomsbury, Oxford University Press, John Wiley & Sons ,[10] and Cengage[11]

Perlego closed a Series A funding round of £3,700,000 in September 2018, led by Accelerated Digital Ventures. This funding will be used to expand Perlego’s headcount and operations across Europe.[12] In October 2018, Perlego released a mobile app for both iOS and Android to further the accessibility of the platform.
