VMRay is a CyberSecurity company headquartered in Bochum, Germany with world-wide sales based in Boston, Massachusetts. The company provides both a cloud-based and on-premises product, VMRay Analyzer. VMRay Analyzer detects malware-related threats using dynamic program analysis for malware analysis. VMRay uses hypervisor-based monitoring built on the academic work of the two founders. VMRay Analyzer is primarily used by CERTs and SOCs in large enterprises, telecoms and other technology vendors for identifying malware, in particular targeted attacks related to APTs.
History
VMRay GmbH, based out of Bochum, Germany, was founded by Carsten Willems and Ralf Hund in 2013 based on the work each had done as part of their Ph.Ds[1] they received that year in computer science / IT-security at the Ruhr-University of Bochum. The first production deployment of VMRay technology was in early 2015. This technology was in turn built on their earlier work on automating dynamic malware analysis.[2] VMRay has received seed funding from High-Tech Gruenderfonds.[3] In October 2016 VMRay closed a Series A investment of 3.5 million euros with eCapital as the lead investor.[4]
In September 2019, VMRay announced that it has closed its Series B round of funding in the amount of $10 million led by Digital+ Partners, one of the leading technology growth equity firms in Europe, and supplemented eCAPITAL, an early investor.[5]
Products
VMRay Analyzer is an automated malware analysis and detection solution that enables security teams to elevate and accelerate their ability to combat malware attacks and vulnerabilities.
VMRay Detector delivers rapid, fully automated threat detection. VMRay Detector can ingest the massive volume of potential threats that are seen by email and web gateways, endpoint detection systems, and security operations systems.
VMRay Email Threat Defender fully automates the scanning of inbound emails by analyzing suspicious attachments and embedded links. By sharing rapid detection results with other tools, VMRay helps thwart or interrupt lateral movement, credentials theft and other downstream activities that lead to the compromise of high-value assets.
In September 2017, VMRay Analyzer received a 5-Star Review and Recommended Tool of the Month from SC Media[6]
