CrocBITE

From HandWiki

CrocBITE was an online database of crocodile attacks reported on humans. The non-profit online research tool helped to scientifically analyze crocodile behavior via complex models.

About

The online database was established in 2013 (2013). Crocodile Specialist Brandon Sideleau created the database itself, while the website portion was paid for and designed by Big Gecko. The database consisted of records obtained through personal research by Brandon Sideleau, as well as contributions from regional authorities, government agencies, and fellow crocodile specialists. The program received funds from Economic and Social Research Council, United Kingdom to the tune of A$30,000[1] and unspecified resourced plus amount from Big Gecko Crocodilian Research, Crocodillian.com and Charles Darwin University.[citation needed]

The objective was that the information would used by communities and conservation managers to help inform and educate people about how to keep safe. The information was vital for Australia and Africa where such attacks are more likely than in other parts of the world. This was the only database of its kind with such comprehensive collection of information made available online.[2]

The website is no longer online since Big Gecko no longer exists as a financial backer. The database itself has always been maintained by Brandon Sideleau and has continued to be updated offline. A new website, entirely run by Brandon Sideleau and called CrocAttack, is expected to launch in 2024.
