Connected Home over IP (CHIP) (or Project Connected Home over IP) is a proprietary, royalty-free home automation connectivity standard project to make a specialized service layer application protocol for constrained devices which goal is to achieve interoperability compatibility among smart home and IoT (Internet of Things) devices/appliances and software products for home automation from different manufacturers.[1]

The project group was launched and introduced by Amazon, Apple, Google,[2][3] Comcast and the Zigbee Alliance in December 18, 2019.[4]

The project is backed by big companies and by being based on proven Internet design principles and protocols it aims to unify the currently fragmented systems.[5]

Products are expected to start to come out in 2021.[6]

CHIP is proprietary. As of 2021-01, the specification reads, "This information within this document is the property of the Zigbee Alliance and its use and disclosure are restricted." Although the CHIP code repository is Apache licensed, there is no available specification, and creating a CHIP compatible device requires use of a remote attestation scheme that prevents adversarial interoperability.

As of May 2021, the CHIP (Connected Home over IP) project has been renamed to "Matter" plus announced to be available as an open standard, and the Zigbee Alliance who governs the specifications for this standard among others has been renamed to Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA).[7]

Background

In December 18, 2019, Amazon, Apple, Google, and the Zigbee Alliance announced the collaboration and formation of the working group of Project Connected Home over IP. The goal of the project is to simplify development for smart home products brands and manufacturers, while increasing the compatibility of the products for consumers.[8][9]

The standard is designed to be based on Internet Protocol (IP). It is designed to enable smart home devices, mobile apps, and cloud services to communicate and to define a specific set of IP-based networking technologies for device certification.[10]

The project group is also expected to be joined by board member companies of Zigbee Alliance, including IKEA, Kroger, LEEDARSON, Legrand, MMB Networks, NXP Semiconductors, Resideo, Samsung SmartThings, Schneider Electric, Signify (formerly Philips Lighting), Silicon Labs, Somfy, and Wulian.[11]
