Kayamkulam vaal

The Kayamkulam vaal ("Kayamkulam sword") is a double-edged sword that was used by the rulers and soldiers of the Nair aristocracy (mostly in Travancore), in Kayamkulam, a princely state of India. An example is on display at the Krishnapuram Palace Museum in Kayamkulam.[1]

It is said to have been used by the Kayamkulam Rajas in the 18th century.[2] Some Nair families in Kayamkulam, such the as Evoors Kannampallils, Velathandethus, Padanilathus, Edathittas, Changankulangaras, Thottathils, Valiyakulangaras, Oachiras, and Menatherils, keep Kayamkulam vaal as historical evidence of their lineage.[citation needed]

The most important among them is the Kayamkulam sword. Unlike the common sword, this one has both its edges sharp.
