The Fugaku (Japanese: 富岳 Hepburn: Fugaku) is a supercomputer that is planned to be installed at the RIKEN Center for Computational Science (R-CCS) in Port Island, Kobe, Hyōgo Prefecture, Japan . It started development in 2014 as the successor to the K computer, and it is scheduled to start operating in 2021.[2]
The Fugaku supercomputer is loaded with the A64FX, a CPU developed by Fujitsu. This CPU is based on ARMv8.2-A and adopts the SVE (Scalable Vector Extension), a new extension for supercomputers.[3] The Fugaku aims to be about 100 times more powerful than the K computer (meaning a performance target of 1 exaFLOPS) and have the highest level of practicability in the world.[4]
On May 23, 2019, RIKEN announced that this supercomputer was named the "Fugaku" (Japanese: 富岳 Hepburn: Fugaku).[5]
On November 2019, the prototype of Fugaku won first place in the Green500 list.[6][7]
