Loab

From HandWiki
Short description: Fictional character

Loab is the name of an unexpectedly emergent image from artificial intelligence (AI) research featuring a distressed macabre older woman.[1][2]

History

First generated in April 2022 by the Twitter user Supercomposite using the algorithmic technique of "negative prompt weights" accessing latent space,[3] the initial prompt – 'Brando::-1', –[4] [5]generated a skyline with cryptic lettering; opposing that image in turn then yielded Loab, the subsequent iterations of which became increasingly violent and gory, itself a totally unexpected result.[6] The persistence of the image is also an algorithmic mystery inasmuch as it vanishes and reappears, a process which is not well understood.[7] The software used to create the images has not been, for various reasons, disclosed by the artist.[8] Loab has been referred to as the "first AI-generated cryptid" and as such has gone viral.[9][10][11]

Response

The project has been controversial,[12] with Smithsonian magazine writing that "Loab sparked some lengthy ethical conversations around visual aesthetics, art and technology".[13]
