History
Universidad de las Fuerzas Armadas - ESPE was established on June 16th, 1922, when the Escuela de Oficiales Ingenieros was created, focused on the formation of Army Officers in Military Engineering procedures, based on war protocols. Afterward, in 1936, it would be renamed as Escuela de Artillería e Ingenieros, helped by the Second Italian Military Mission, that restructured this institution toward technical education, merging artillery and engineering according to the European Canon. After engineering became a global breakthrough, especially after World War II, the institution once again was renamed, this time as Escuela Técnica de Ingenieros and for the first time it allowed admission to civilian students in 1972. In December 1977, the Ecuadorian Congress decided to rename the institution as Escuela Politécnica del Ejército - ESPE.
On June 26 of 2013, the Superior Education Committee of Ecuador decided to approve the constitution of a new Education Center that merged the three extant military Higher Education institutions: Escuela Politécnica del Ejército - ESPE, Universidad Naval Rafael Morán Valverde - UNINAV and Instituto Tecnológico Superior Aeronáutico - ITSA into a bigger institution dubbed Universidad de las Fuerzas Armadas - ESPE.
