The Economic Policy Council in Finland was established in 2014[1] to provide independent evaluation of the objectives of economic policy and the effectiveness of the policy measures chosen.[2] The council publishes an annual report evaluating recent economic policy decisions in Finland.[3]

Mission

Based on the decree issued by the Finnish Government (61/2014)[4] the purpose of the Economic Policy Council is to assess:[5]

  1. the appropriateness of targets set for economic policy
  2. the extent to which those targets have been met
  3. the effectiveness of the policy measures employed
  4. the coordination of various policy areas and how these tie in with other areas of public policy
  5. the success of economic policy with particular reference to economic growth and stability, employment and the long-term sustainability of public finances
  6. the quality of the forecasting and assessment methods used in the preparation of economic policy

Members

The Council is independent and composed of members of the academic community. Members of the Council are appointed by the Government based on a proposal by Finnish economics departments and the Academy of Finland.[5] The Concil has five members that are selected for a five year term of office.[6] The first council (term of office: 1.4.2014–31.3.2019):[7]

  • Chair: Roope Uusitalo, Professor of Economics at the University of Jyväskylä
  • Vice Chair: Mikko Puhakka, Professor of Economics at the University of Oulu
  • Torben M. Andersen, Professor of Economics at the University of Århus
  • Anneli Anttonen, Professor of Social Policy at the University of Tampere
  • Kaisa Kotakorpi, Professor of Economics at the University of Turku
