The G20 Startup20, also known as the Startup20 Engagement Group, is an initiative that aims to promote entrepreneurship, innovation, and startup ecosystems within the G20 nations. It serves as a platform for collaboration and knowledge sharing among startup communities across different countries. The group focuses on issues related to cross-border listings, accounting standards, and access to debt products for startups. [1]

Background

The G20 Startup20 was established in 2023 as a result of discussions held during the G20 summits. The group recognizes the important role of startups in driving economic growth, creating jobs, and fostering technological advancements. By fostering cooperation and exchanging best practices, the group aims to strengthen the startup ecosystem in G20 nations and enable startups to thrive in a globalized economy. [2]

The G20 is composed of most of the world's largest economies' finance ministries, including both industrialised and developing nations; it accounts for around 80% of gross world product (GWP),[3] 75% of international trade, two-thirds of the global population,[4] and 60% of the world's land area.

Objectives

The primary objectives of the G20 Startup20 include:

Cross-border listings: The group aims to facilitate cross-border listings for startups, enabling them to access international capital markets and attract investment from global investors. Accounting standards: The group seeks to establish common accounting standards for startups, which would enhance transparency and comparability of financial statements across different jurisdictions. Access to debt products: The G20 Startup20 advocates for improved access to debt financing options for startups, recognizing the unique funding needs and challenges faced by early-stage ventures.

Activities

The G20 Startup20 conducts various activities and initiatives to fulfill its objectives. These include:

Inception meeting in Hyderabad: The group held its inception meeting in Hyderabad, to discuss the roadmap and action plan for the initiative. The meeting brought together representatives from G20 nations, startup ecosystems, and relevant stakeholders to set the agenda for future engagements. [5] Creation of startup ecosystem in all G20 nations: During a meeting in Goa, the Startup20 Engagement Group called for the creation of robust startup ecosystems in all G20 nations. This involves developing supportive policies, improving access to finance, fostering innovation, and promoting entrepreneurship. [6]

Knowledge sharing and capacity building: The group facilitates knowledge sharing and capacity building through workshops, seminars, and conferences. These events provide opportunities for startups to learn from experienced entrepreneurs, investors, and industry experts. [7]

Membership

The G20 Startup20 consists of representatives from startup ecosystems, government agencies, industry associations, and relevant stakeholders from G20 nations. The group encourages active participation and engagement from various sectors to ensure a diverse range of perspectives and expertise. [8]
