Organization:IEEE Industrial Electronics Society

From HandWiki

The IEEE Industrial Electronics Society (IES) is one of the 39 Society of the IEEE.[1] It is one of the oldest societies within IEEE with its roots going back to the early 1950s.[2] The focuses of this Society are on the theory and application of electronics, controls, communications, instrumentation, and computational intelligence to industrial and manufacturing systems and processes. The society oversees the publication of three scientific periodicals that are consistently listed in the top 500 journals worldwide annually ranked according to their impact factor.[3]

History

  • February 21, 1951 - First meeting of the IRE Industrial Electronics Group
  • May 8, 1951 - Name change to IRE Professional Group on Industrial Electronics (PG-IE)
  • August 1953 - Published the first volume of the Transactions on Professional Group on Industrial Electronics
  • August 21, 1963 - IRE merged with AIEE and become IEEE. The PG-IE approved the merger of IRE's PG-IE and AIEE's group on control instrumentation (GCI)
  • August 22, 1963 - The merger of the PG-IE and the GCI into Professional Group on Industrial Electronics and Control Instrumentation (PG-IECI) was approved by the IEEE Executive Committee
  • October 14, 1964 - Name change to Group on Industrial Electronics and Control Instrumentation (PG-IECI)
  • 1975 - The first IECON conference was held in Philadelphia. Until then there had been only a sponsored session at the Industry Applications Society Conference
  • March 20, 1978 - Name change to Industrial Electronics and Control Instrumentation Society (IECIS)
  • June 1982 - Name change to Industrial Electronics Society

Field of Interest

Industrial electronics is a broad subject. The areas of interest of the society have been evolving over the years and were reflecting the adoption of new technologies that were emerging at the time. The 1970s were dominated by the interest microprocessors, 1980s introduced robotics, and later mechatronics applied to factory automation. The early 21st century brought industrial information technology and more advances in factory communications and automation. Current trends are always reflected by the scope of the society's journals and the topics of articles published.

Publications

Main page: Engineering:List of IEEE publications

Industrial Electronics Society oversees the publication of twelve periodicals, including nine scholarly journals, one magazine, and two e-newsletters.[4] Industrial Electronics Magazine, IEEE Transactions on Industrial Electronics, and IEEE Transactions on Industrial Informatics are consistently listed in the top 500 list of journals ranked according to their impact factor.[5]

Journals

  • IEEE Transactions on Industrial Electronics (TIE), IF=8.162:[6]

The journal publishes articles in a wide range of areas, associated with industrial electronics, with the mandatory requirement that every paper must include experimentally verified theoretical research results. The areas of interest, covered by the journal scope, include a variable speed motor drives with regard to the drive topology, speed/position/current control, power electronic supply, and electric machine aspects; utilization of electronics in both renewable electric energy sources and in electric power systems, covering aspect of both converter topology and control; further, instrumentation and measurement techniques are also encompassed provided that the sensors include relevant electronics content. One of the important areas is the diagnosis and detection of faults in all of the above-mentioned systems, as well as the testing. In general, the emphasis is on solutions leading toward the improvement of industrial systems and processes through enhancement of the electronic solutions, application of artificial intelligence, utilization of improved control schemes, etc. including in mechatronic systems and robotics.

  • IEEE Transactions on Industrial Informatics (TII), IF=11.648[7]
  • IEEE Journal of Emerging and Selected Topics in Industrial Electronics (JESTIE), [8]

a new gold open-access journal in the framework of the IEEE accelerated transition to Open Access publications program, fully compliant with Plan S by cOAlition S. OJIES was officially launched on January 1, 2020. The scope of OJIES includes all fields of the Industrial Electronics Society. It accepts papers on topics relevant to the theory and applications of electronics, controls, communications, instrumentation, and computational intelligence to industrial, infrastructure, and manufacturing systems and processes. OJIES also focuses on information-intensive, knowledge-based automation, and digitalization, to improve industrial, energy, mobility, health, home/building, and other infrastructure eco-systems. OJIES is 100% open access, meaning that all content is freely available without charge to users or their institutions. The articles can be submitted via ScholarOne Manuscripts.

There are also other co-sponsored journals.

Magazines

  • IEEE Industrial Electronics Magazine, IF=8.360:[10]

The magazine covers topics relevant to emerging technologies, methods, and practice in industrial electronics product research, development, and education. It serves a wide and diverse audience ranging from practitioners and researchers that work in electronics, controls, communications, instrumentation, cyber-physical systems, advanced computational intelligence, and industrial manufacturing and processes. Besides such feature or position papers, the magazine also features editorial columns such as Women in IES, society, and chapter news or book reviews. The reader is in the focus: articles are expected to be informative, educative, and an inspiration.
