Organization:IEEE Computational Intelligence Society
The IEEE Computational Intelligence Society is a professional society of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) focusing on "the theory, design, application, and development of biologically and linguistically motivated computational paradigms emphasizing neural networks, connectionist systems, genetic algorithms, evolutionary programming, fuzzy systems, and hybrid intelligent systems in which these paradigms are contained"[1].It has a long tradition of developing, promoting, organizing and running activities directed to ensure equal opportunities to both genders in the IEEE Computational Intelligence Society's life and the computational intelligence arena.[2] More generally, it supports diversity and inclusion in all its activities.[3]
History
The society was formed as the IEEE Neural Networks Council on November 17, 1989 with representatives from 12 different IEEE societies. On November 21, 2001, the IEEE Neural Networks Council became the IEEE Neural Networks Society. In November 2003, it changed its name to the IEEE Computational Intelligence Society.[4]

The IEEE CIS publishes four peer-reviewed scientific journals:[5]

The society also publishes a magazine, Computational Intelligence Magazine, and sponsors an IEEE Press/Wiley book series on Computational Intelligence.
Education
The CIS established an education platform to enable members of any skills to easily find the resources/opportunities for learning CIS techniques.[6] To promote knowledge dissemination in computational intelligence, multimedia tutorials are being developed and provided, as well as courses and summer schools are being supported. An easily accessible CIS Resource Center is being established that contains up-to-date educational materials on CI topics covering different age groups and different education/knowledge levels.
To help graduate student research and exchange, especially at the international level, IEEE CIS provides graduate student research grants, which cover travel expenses as well as living expenses, to enable graduate students to visit another university, institute or research agency for collaboration with researchers in the field of interest. IEEE CIS also organizes summer schools for senior undergraduate, graduate students, post-doc and young researchers who are willingly to deepen their skills in computational intelligence and related areas. Summer Schools usually consist of lectures, seminars, discussions, provided by local or international academic scholars or industries working in computational intelligence and interdisciplinary areas from fundamental theory to applications.
IEEE CIS also has Distinguished Lecture Program (DLP) offering stimulating lectures given by distinguished IEEE CIS professionals and scholars. DLP also aims at helping young researchers (masters and doctoral students) by providing suggestions/guidance on their research problems, as well as promoting computational intelligence tools and techniques among undergraduate students to make them interested in CIS fields of interest. Webinar talks which are delivered by renowned academics, young professionals, or industry experts, are also provided in IEEE CIS.
In order for the high school students and teachers to know about CIS-related techniques, IEEE CIS designs introduction courses of the three fundamental pillars of computational intelligence: Fuzzy Logic, Neural Networks, and Evolutionary Computation. The contents of the course materials are particularly designed suitable for beginners who wish to find out more about these areas. IEEE CIS also established an Education Portal aimed at enabling CIS educators to share practices, experiences, materials and reading lists. This is to facilitate entry-level undergraduate lecturers and high school teachers to obtain guidance on how to teach CI.
New initiatives cover the needs from the high school to continuous education in order to serve the computational intelligence community and all people interested in computational intelligence and its applications. Among these planned activities there are also: student games-based competitions, high school outreach programs, continuing education programs (especially for people in industry), and creation of the educational archive.

Technical Activities
The CIS technical activities cover many exciting technologies in computational intelligence (CI) and their applications in a wide variety of areas.[10] CI aims to mimicking nature for effective problem solving and the CIS technical activities promote scientific research, technological development, practical applications, and knowledge dissemination in CI.
The involvement of students and young professionals in these activities is promoted through different mentoring programs.
The CIS currently has 12 Technical Committees (TCs), which can be grouped into the following three categories:
Technology-oriented TCs promote CI technologies. They are TCs on:
- Neural Networks
- Fuzzy Systems
- Evolutionary Computation
- Cognitive and Developmental Systems
- Adaptive Dynamic Programming and Reinforcement Learning
Application-oriented TCs deal with applications of CI technologies. They are TCs on:
- Bioinformatics and Bioengineering
- Computational Finance and Economics
- Data Mining and Big Data Analytics
- Games
- Smart World
Incubator TCs identify and nurture new CI technologies and new areas for CI applications. They are TCs on:
- Emergent Technologies
- Intelligent Systems Applications
Industrial and Governmental Activities
An Industrial and Governmental Activities Committee[11] has been created in January 2022 with the objective to work on seven components interacting synergistically:
- Industry drivers - to create and evolve the CIS value proposition for Industry.
- Industrial and Governmental Membership Diversity - to increase the number of experienced industry volunteers, reaching out to our Industry Sr. Members & Fellows.
- CIS Offerings to Industry - to create services & products for Industry, ranging from position papers to reports, webinars, tutorials, industry-centered panels, workshops, and conferences with keynotes by industry leaders.
- I&GA Structure - to jump-start I&GA by creating I&GA Committees & Task Forces focused on various industry sectors.
- Standards - to develop a CIS Standards Committee strategy that leverages our technical expertise while being demand-driven. The Standards Committee deals with standards, data sets, and software of interest to people working in CI, promoting transfers of CI technologies to the industry. The first IEEE Standard sponsored by IEEE Computational Intelligence Society was IEEE 1855.[12] The second standard was IEEE 1849.[13]
- Government Engagement - to establish a relationship with AI-friendly government agencies, inviting their thought-leaders to speak at CIS webinars and conferences to describe their initiatives.
- Industry Engagement in Conferences - to create a forum within CIS conferences, in which Industry can participate without having to submit scholarly papers. Industry leaders can define current and future business and technology challenges.
