The Institute of Biomaterials and Biomedical Engineering (IBBME) was founded in 1962 at the University of Toronto (U of T). IBBME is home to the common research and teaching interests of the faculties of Applied Science and Engineering, Dentistry, and Medicine at the U of T. Located in the heart of the Toronto Discovery District, IBBME offers research ties with sister departments at U of T, as well as researchers in the Hospital for Sick Children, University Health Network, Mount Sinai Hospital, Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, The New Women's College Hospital, St. Michael's Hospital (Toronto), Toronto Rehabilitation Institute, Bloorview Kids Rehab and MaRS Discovery District.

IBBME offers three graduate degree programs:

  • Biomedical Engineering Program (MASc and PhD degrees) - was established in 2001.
  • Clinical Engineering Program (MHSc and PhD degrees) - established in 1984, the Clinical Engineering Program (originally only MHSc in Clinical Biomedical Engineering) was the first of its kind in Canada.[1] The program produces engineers with expertise in the applied side of biomedical engineering in health care. Most of the graduate students in the Clinical Engineering option at IBBME, intern at medical companies.[2] In the past, opportunities have varied in its nature and location across Canada, US and Europe. Examples include Baylis Medical, Massachusetts General Hospital[3] and Stryker Corporation.[4]
  • Collaborative Program in Biomedical Engineering (MASc/MSc and PhD degrees) - provides a way for students to cross traditional disciplinary boundaries.
