Organization:Ireland Newfoundland Partnership

From HandWiki

The Ireland Newfoundland Partnership (Dublin) and Ireland Business Partnerships (St. John's) facilitate cooperation between Ireland and Newfoundland in the areas of business, culture, education and government. Both organizations are part of the respective governments and are responsible for a Memorandum of Understanding that was agreed by former Taoiseach John Bruton and former Premier Brian Tobin in 1996. It was since reaffirmed by Taoiseach Bertie Ahern and Premier Danny Williams.

The agreement derives from the migratory ties between Ireland and Newfoundland. These migrations date back to the 17th century, and stemmed mainly from the South East of Ireland. Today, approximately 50% of the population of Newfoundland is of Irish origin, and traditional Irish customs have taken on a new life in modern-day Newfoundland culture through the influx of Irish Newfoundlanders.
