The Lagos State Materials Testing Laboratory (LSMTL) was established on March 15, 2006.[1][2] The agency is a parastatal under the supervision of the Lagos State Ministry of works and Infrastructure.[3] The goal of the agency is to prevent building collapse in Lagos state by carrying out tests on buildings, civil engineering and building/construction materials for quality assurance.[4][5] The quality assurance tests carried out by the agency on building and civil engineering materials are destructive and non destructive tests, Sub-soil Investigation test, Cement, Water and Chemical Tests.[6][7]

The agency operates six divisional offices across the State namely: Badagry, Ikorodu, Epe, Agege, Ikeja 1 and Ikeja 2,with a staff strength of 180 staff[8][9].The main office of the agency is located at Public Works Corporation Complex, Lagos – Ibadan Express Way,, Ojodu-Berger, Lagos state.[10][11]

Activities

  1. The agency has conducted tests on 19,968 building materials to prevent cases of building collapse in Lagos state.[12]
  2. The agency partnered with Nigerian Institute of Builders (NIOB) to curb the use of substandard materials for the construction of building in the state.[13]
  3. The Lagos State Materials Testing Laboratory carried out integrity tests on Eko, Ijora and Marine Bridges in Lagos state.[14][15]
  4. LSMTL rescued minors serving as laborers in construction sites[16]
  5. The agency sealed 4 estates and 22 houses in the Lekki area of the state[17]
  6. The Lagos state government through LSMTL carried out Non-Destructive Test (NDT) on selected primary and secondary schools across Lagos state.[18]
