The Healthy Indian Project (THIP) is an Indian healthcare company. It operates across healthcare media and information, health and patient education, publishing, insurance and primary healthcare services through its sub-brands and platforms, including THIP Media, THIP Academy, Life Raksha Magazine, and Life Raksha Clinic.[4][5][6][7]

Areas of activity

The Healthy Indian Project (THIP) operates in Media and Publishing, Patient education and Insurance distribution in India. Its activities include digital publishing health information and fact-checking, online and offline patient education programmes and health-insurance distribution.

Media and Publishing

THIP Media is the organisation's health information and fact-checking platform. It publishes health-related articles, explainers and fact checks covering subjects such as diseases, medicines, treatments, nutrition and vaccination. The World Health Organization's Vaccine Safety Net lists THIP as a health information and fact-checking platform focused on health literacy in India.[8] THIP Media was selected in 2021 as a health-specialist partner in Facebook (now Meta)'s third-party fact-checking programme in India[9] ,with its work covering health-related misinformation.[10] In 2022, THIP Media launched Ask RAKSHA, a health-information and fact-checking chatbot on WhatsApp that allows users to ask health-related questions and check claims about health and medicine.[11]

THIP Media has also been included in academic research examining fact-checking organisations in India, including research on their reach, awareness and relevance among rural communities.[12][13]

Life Raksha, a health magazine published by The Healthy Indian Project, first issue, November 2025.[14]

THIP's health-information activities also extend to print publishing through Life Raksha, a monthly health Magazine launched in 2025. Each issue focuses on a health topic and contains articles and material from medical professionals.[15] The magazine is published in print and digital formats.[16]

Patient Education

Alongside its publishing activities, THIP operates THIP Academy, an online patient-education platform offering structured courses for the general public. The courses cover subjects including women's health, child health, vaccination, nutrition and other health conditions, and are reviewed and presented by doctors.[17]

THIP Academy has also collaborated with multiple medical associations in India to develop digital patient-education programmes covering various health conditions and treatments.[18][19][20]

Insurance

THIP also entered the health-insurance sector through THIP Insurance Broking Services Private Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of THIP Healthtech Private Limited. The company received an Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) broking licence in 2025 to distribute health and term-life insurance products.[21] THIP has described health insurance as an extension of its existing health-information and education activities, intended to serve the health-focused communities built through these activities.[22]

Research

THIP has conducted survey-based research examining health awareness, health-information-seeking behaviour and perceptions of health misinformation among Indians. In 2022, a survey conducted by THIP in association with CyberMedia Research covered 1,602 respondents across eight Indian cities and examined changes in health attitudes following the COVID-19 pandemic.[23][24]

In 2023, another survey conducted by THIP Media with CyberMedia Research examined Indians' ability to identify reliable health information online. The study surveyed 1,500 respondents and reported that 62% said they did not know how to identify trustworthy health information on the internet, while 55% said they needed help determining whether a health claim was true or false.[25]

Affiliations, registrations and certifications

Affiliations

THIP Media is a member of the World Health Organization's Vaccine Safety Net (VSN), a network of websites providing information on vaccine safety. The WHO lists The Healthy Indian Project as a health information and fact-checking platform in India and records its membership in the VSN.[26]

THIP Media was a verified signatory to the International Fact-Checking Network (IFCN) Code of Principles, administered by the Poynter Institute.[27]

THIP is also listed as a member organisation in the UNESCO Media and Information Literacy Alliance directory, a global network coordinated by UNESCO that brings together organisations and experts working to promote media and information literacy worldwide. [28]

Certifications and accreditations

THIP Media received certification from the Health On the Net Foundation (HON) under the HONcode programme in 2020.[29] The HONcode certification programme was discontinued in 2022.

In 2023, THIP Media was the first Indian website to receive certification for medical content from the American Accreditation Commission International (AACI) under the @TRUST Certification programme.[30][31]

Registrations

Since 2025, THIP's monthly health magazine, Life Raksha, has been registered with the Press Registrar General of India (PRGI), formerly the Registrar of Newspapers for India (RNI), as a periodical publication.[32][33]

In 2025, through its subsidiary company, THIP Insurance, The Healthy Indian Project received a Direct Insurance Broker (Life & General) licence from the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) in 2025, enabling it to distribute life and general insurance products, including Health insurance, in India.[34][35][36]

Partnerships and collaborations

THIP has participated in collaborations and collective initiatives focused on health information and misinformation. In 2022, THIP Media partnered with Newschecker to establish a collaborative newsroom focused on identifying and fact-checking health misinformation in regional languages in India and South Asia.[37]

In the same year, THIP Media collaborated with the Amrita Centre for Advanced Research in Ayurveda (ĀCĀRA), part of Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, to fact-check claims and misinformation related to Ayurveda.[38]

THIP also participated in collaborative initiatives to counter misinformation, including the Misinformation Combat Alliance, launched in 2022, and the Meedan supported Ekta fact-checking consortium, which it joined in 2023.[39][40]

THIP also participated in the Shakti Collective, a pan-India fact-checking consortium supported by the Google News Initiave that works to identify, track, and debunk online misinformation and deepfakes. Fact-checks produced by THIP Media are shared with and republished by participating news organisations under the #ShaktiCollective banner, enabling health-related verifications to be distributed across multiple media platforms.[41]

In 2026, THIP Academy expanded its collaborations with medical associations to develop digital patient education programmes. The Indian Association of Community and Family Medicine (IACFM) became the Knowledge Partner for a programme on adult vaccination, providing scientific guidance, academic oversight and clinical expertise, while THIP Academy developed and delivered the digital learning programme.[42]

The Indian Society for the Study of Reproduction and Fertility (ISSRF) subsequently became the Knowledge Partner for THIP Academy’s digital patient education programme on endometriosis. Under the collaboration, ISSRF provides scientific and academic oversight, while THIP Academy is responsible for instructional design, content development, digital learning and programme delivery.[43]

In August 2026, THIP signed an MoU with the Indian Society of Lifestyle Medicine (ISLM) to develop digital patient education programmes on childhood obesity and polycystic ovarian disease (PCOD). ISLM serves as the Knowledge Partner, providing scientific review and academic oversight, while THIP Academy develops the curriculum and digital learning programmes.[44]

Media coverage

THIP Media’s health fact checks have been cited by international fact-checking and media organisations during the verification of medical claims, including Verificat in Spain and the Australian Associated Press.[45][46]

In India, THIP Media’s fact-checking content has been republished with attribution by news organisations including NDTV, News18, ABP Live, and Navbharat Times.[47][48][49][50]

THIP Media’s health information fact checks have also been referenced by other fact-checking organisations that have been verified signatories to the International Fact-Checking Network’s Code of Principles, including Factly and NewsMeter.[51][52][53]

In 2024, Channel NewsAsia featured The Healthy Indian Project in its documentary Fact Vs. Fiction – India’s Disinformation War, which examined the spread of misinformation in India and referenced THIP’s research.[54] The documentary also included an interview with THIP's Founder and CEO, Sudipta Sengupta.[55]

Awards and recognition

In 2024, The Healthy Indian Project received the Best Health Literacy Platform award at the Atal Samman Samaroh and the Best Health Companies Award at the Health 2.0 Conference in Dubai, for its work in health information, health literacy and health misinformation-related fact-checking. Ask RAKSHA, THIP's WhatsApp-based health information and fact-checking chatbot, was also named Health Solution of the Year at the Economic Times HealthWorld Nutrition & Wellness Awards.[56][57][58]

In 2025, The Healthy Indian Project was recognised with the Outlook Business Nation Builders Award as India's Most Trusted Health Information Platform for its work in health literacy across digital and print platforms.[59]

In 2026, THIP received the Breakthrough Digital Patient Education Initiative award at the 5th India Vaccine Leaders Conclave and the Best Digital Health Platform award at the AHPI Leadership Awards for its patient education platform THIP Academy.[60][61]

Funding

In 2020, THIP Healthtech Pvt Ltd received a US$31,800 grant through the Fact-Checking Development Fund, a programme supported by the Google News Initiative and administered through the International Fact-Checking Network at Poynter. The grant supported THIP Media's "Video Facts" project.[62]

In 2025, THIP received a further US$100,000 grant through the Global Fact Check Fund[63], supported by Google and YouTube and administered by the International Fact-Checking Network, to develop health masterclasses through THIP Academy.[64]
