PC Pitstop

From HandWiki

PC Pitstop is an American software company headquartered in Sioux City, Iowa, United States .[1][2] The company provides cyber security software and services.[3][4][5]

History

PC Pitstop was founded in 1999 by Rob Cheng.[6][7] Cheng was an executive at Gateway computers, and was looking to provide solutions to the common problems he saw during his time. He worked on developing a product that can automate technical support and lower the cost of support. Their product, PC Matic, uses automated whitelist technology to prevent malicious files from infecting systems.[8][9][10][11]

Controversies

In 2004, PC Pitstop published articles and notices to their customers that Gator software was spyware. Gator responded to this claim with a libel lawsuit that the two companies ultimately settled.[12] The suit alleged, "false advertising, unfair business practices, trade libel, defamation and tortious interference." and lead to PC Pitstop removing several pages from their website that made these claims.[13] PC Pitstop then launched a new website dedicated to it's criticism of Claria Corporation's Gator software while avoiding the term 'spyware'.[14]

In December of 2016, PC Pitstop released a joint antivirus test with AV-Comparatives. Shortly after, Malwarebytes began flagging PC Pitstop's products as a PUP (potentially unwanted program) and removing them.[15] Ultimately the two companies reconciled with PC Pitstop making product changes to address their concerns, and Malwarebytes no longer removing the products.[16]
