The multiplicity of particles created in high-energy collisions follows a distribution with a long tail, qualitatively similar to the distribution of energy loss (Landau distribution). The curve and particularly its scaling properties have been discussed by Koba, Nielsen and Olesen Koba72, from whose initials its name has been derived. Parameterization attempts for multiplicity distributions have been discussed, and KNO scaling violations reported, e.g. Friedländer91, Alner87.
