Place:Iznassen
The Beni Iznassen region (in Arabic: بني سناسن,) is a low-lying mountainous region in northeastern Morocco,[1] bordering the province of Berkan (except Saidia), the northern part of the province of Oujda, the northern part of the province of Taourirt, northwest of the closed border between Morocco and Algeria, 400 km east of Rabat, the country's capital.[2]
The Beni Iznassen Mountains extend for 34 km in an east-west direction. The highest point is Jebel Fourhal, at 1,509 meters above sea level.[3]
Inhabitants
For over two centuries, this has been the territory of the Arabized Zenata Berber tribe of the Beni Iznassen. The population speaks mainly Arabic and Tarifit.
In 1940, the Francoist government demanded the annexation of the Beni Snassen to Spain. A memorandum of understanding signed in 1925 between French and Spanish leaders, following the Rif War, stipulated their transfer to Spanish control. However, in 1940, French diplomats refused to relinquish this territory, which held strategic importance as it bordered the Oran region to the east, a region then coveted by Franco's regime. On August 29, 1940, Paul Baudouin, Vichy's Minister of Foreign Affairs, proposed, in order to put an end to pressure from Spanish nationalists,to cede the Beni Snassen to them as soon as general peace was established in Europe. The cession never took place.[4]
