Short description: Cultural micronation founded in Italy in 2019

The Republic of Poets (Italian: Repubblica dei Poeti) is a cultural micronation symbolic founded in Mount Parnassus (Greece) in 2019. It operates as an unrecognized symbolic entity dedicated to the promotion of contemporary poetry, literary communities, and civic cultural participation.

The project is associated with a network of Italian and Brazilian municipalities and cultural organizations that have supported it through letters of intent, municipal resolutions, and other cultural acts.[1][2][3][4]

History

The Republic of Poets was established in 2019 during the expansion of WikiPoesia, a collaborative platform documenting poetry awards, contemporary poets, and literary initiatives. The project adopted the form of a micronation to symbolically represent a form of poetic citizenship and to promote cultural engagement through ceremonies, honorary recognitions, and partnerships with local institutions.[5][6]

Between 2019 and 2026, the Republic of Poets developed a symbolic civic structure and established cultural relationships with municipalities and local institutions in Italy and Brazil. Its activities have included festivals, poetry awards, public readings, civic events, and symbolic ceremonies.[7]

Symbolic attributes

The Republic of Poets uses the language and imagery of civic institutions in a symbolic and cultural sense. Its motto has been presented as Dignity of the Word, while its symbolic currency has been referred to as the Versus. The project has also used Parnassus as a symbolic reference to poetry and literary tradition.[8]

These elements are not claims of sovereign statehood, but part of the project's cultural and ceremonial identity.[9]

In the context of micronations

Micronations are generally described in scholarly literature as non-state entities that adopt the language, symbols, and practices of statehood while lacking legal recognition as sovereign states.[10]

The Republic of Poets belongs to the cultural and symbolic side of this phenomenon. Its emphasis is not on territorial sovereignty, but on poetic identity, symbolic citizenship, ceremonies, and cultural participation.[11]

Comparable cultural or artistic micronations include Užupis, Frestonia, and Ladonia.[12]
