AR Zone (Korean: AR 존) is an application on Samsung Galaxy smartphones and tablets. It provides numerous augmented reality (AR) tools[1] like AR Emoji, and consolidates several related services into one app. The app comes preloaded on most Galaxy devices but is also obtainable from the Galaxy Store.
History
AR Zone was first released for Samsung Galaxy S20 and other devices updated to One UI 2.1. It brought together several augmented reality features that were located in Air Command, AR Emoji and Bixby Vision,[2][3] such as the My Emoji Maker app.[4]
In 2018, Samsung announced that Disney characters will be made as an AR Emoji.[5]
Features
AR Emoji
The AR Emoji Camera lets users create animated 3D avatars (called My Emoji) of themselves, and make pictures or videos using it. They can choose a pre-existing emoji or generate an AR emoji of themselves through Samsung Camera or Gallery. However, it is crucial to use only personal photos to avoid infringing on the rights of third parties; Galaxy users bear full responsibility for any such violations.[6] The My Emoji can be edited in AR Emoji Studio.[7] The website SamMobile described it as creating "your own Samsung Sam-like avatar", referring to the virtual assistant character that went viral in 2021.[8]
The AR Emoji has also been integrated as a watch face in the Galaxy Watch 4. Additionally, Samsung also offer an SDK for Unity that allows the avatar to be used in other applications.[9]
Stickers using the My Emoji can be created in AR Emoji Stickers.[8] Even though every single emoji created using AR Emoji Camera or AR Emoji Studio creates stickers, it is still possible to create AR Emoji Stickers from scratch or edit the existing ones using editor in AR Emoji Stickers.[10]
Other tools
AR Doodle is a feature to draw (i.e. doodle) on objects while it is being captured on the device camera.[11] Deco Pic is another feature in the AR Zone for adding frames, stickers and GIFs on an existing photo or video.[7]
3D Scanner, which is available on select devices with a time of flight (ToF) camera, create 3D models of real-world objects. It requires the device camera to scan an object from all directions.[12]
Another tool is Quick Measure which measures area, length, depth and distance of real-world objects, also making use of ToF.[13]
Places, Makeup, Home Decor and Styling features were discontinued in 2020.[14]
